Bravo! It looks like the Iowa City Council is about to make some changes to reign in irresponsible bar owners here.
Gregg Hennigan reports that councilors indicated their support for modifying their liquor license renewal guidelines to get tougher on problem bars. They also support allowing police to test bar employees for alcohol to make sure they’re not drinking on the job.
If council follows through, these changes couldĀ improve downtown without making responsible bar owners pay the price. I think that’s the right strategy.
The right strategy would be changing the drinking age to an enforcable and just 18, instead of the two-tier approach to adult rights… with age off the table, we can deal with alcohol abuse in its own right more effectively.
